Diary of a man down under - Day 4

By neil, 20 February, 2011

Oh joy! I decide to head over to Fitzroy Gardens today, and within 5 minutes of leaving the hotel it's raining!

Tried finding somewhere to get a bacon toastie for breakfast, but one thing I've noticed about cafes here is the breakfast menu tends to look a little pretentious. I'd expected the Aussie breakfast to be somewhat similar to a good old English breakfast. Perhaps I'm just looking in the wrong places! Given the time, settled for a cheese and ham toastie at a coffee shop near Flinders Street station. Rain seems to have stopped, so may yet brave the Gardens!

Update: 1400
Well the rains held off so a pleasant early afternoon stroll through Melbourne's Treasury and Fitzroy Gardens. Few wedding parties wandering around. Plenty of photos taken. Tried spending a little more time on composing shots using the surroundings and, in the case of the Miniature Tudor Village, the local wildlife! (Quite a few birds wandering around so was trying to go for the Invasion of the Giant Birds shot. Sadly, birds are not the most cooperative models to work with!) The photos will make it online once I get back, so feel free to leave some feedback then.

Just to decide what to do for the afternoon now!

Update: 1650
Bit more park life this afternoon. Fairly long walk through East Melbourne and through Melbourne Park to Alexandra Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens, King's Domain, past the Shrine of Remembrance and back to Fed Square. Now enjoying a Beechwood Pale Ale trying to put out of my mind the realisation I have 294 photos to process from just 2 days (121 yesterday, 173 today)! A few of those are just "reference" shots for memory, but it's still a lot! Nearly time or something to eat and recharge various batteries. Thing I'll start writing some notes for the photos then get an early night. Off to Sydney tomorrow by rail replacement coach and train. Leave at 0730, and it's only a 14 hour trip; but great way to see the countryside!

Had a VB. Nothing special. Is the Draught better than the bottled? Tried to order a Hahn as a pre-food drink but truce run out. On the Coopers Original Pale Ale instead.

Neil,

Glad to see the British weather is following you down under. Enjoy and be sure to have a VB & Hahn!?!

Cheers,
Ed.
